Spearheaded by Michael Waterson, Lumen North America and also board member of BABC of Michigan, we had 40 people from diverse career backgrounds attend our first official launch of the BABC of Michigan's Young Leaders Organization (YLO) to hear Paul Mascarenas, OBE, share his life and career experiences, opportunities and mentorship at Auto Europe in Birmingham, MI on June 20th, 2016.
Paul Mascarenas was previous VP and CTO at Ford Motor Company. He currently serves as president of FISITA, the international Federation of AutomotiveEngineering Societiesand holds a number of board level positions, including BABC of Michigan. A dual UK/US citizen, he is a Chartered Engineer and fellow of both SAE International and the Society of Mechanical Engineers. In 2015, he was appointed and OBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his service to the automotive industry.
Auto Europe founded by Eugen Schick in 1962 as Pontiac Sports Car. In 2001 The Morgan Motor Company and Lotus Carswere added to the vehicle lines. Auto Europe offers premium new and pre-driven European vehicles and is one of the largest independent motor vehicle service centers in Michigan.
Key to Paul's success was the mentors he had who gave him advice and direction to help pave his way to success within Ford Motor Company. He also learned that he "had the knack" to be succesful at anything he did.
The crowd was engaged throughout the presentation with plenty of questions when opened up to the floor.
Martin French, President of BABCMI, asked Paul,
"If you were to write a letter to your younger self, what would you put in it as advice for your career?"
Paul's response: "Be less risk adverse......it could have opened a lot more doors....but I have no regrets about how I have gone through my career."
On being asked the question about mentorship, Paul suggested everyone should have a mentor to guide and bounce ideas off and meet up 3-4 times a year but always know they are available.
